IMO elects new Secretary-General: Mr. Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that Mr. Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco will be its new Secretary-General. He was unanimously elected by the IMO Assembly on 30 November, following the recommendation of the Council at its 129th session.

Mr. Dominguez Velasco will start his four-year term as Secretary-General on 1 January 2024. He is the 10th person to hold this position in the history of the Organization.

The current Secretary-General, Mr. Kitack Lim, welcomed his successor and expressed his confidence in his abilities. Mr. Lim said:

“Mr. Dominguez Velasco has the wisdom and the skills to lead the Secretariat in advancing the mission and the objectives of the Organization, in all areas of its work.”

Mr. Lim also handed over a detailed briefing paper to Mr. Dominguez Velasco, as a “symbolic act of transition and succession”, to help him prepare for his new role.

Mr. Dominguez Velasco thanked the Assembly for their trust and support.
